Three Rivers - Vereeniging

Vereeniging is a city in Gauteng province, South Africa, situated where the Klip River empties into the northern loop of the Vaal River. The name Vereeniging meaning “association” or “union” is derived from a Dutch/Afrikaans word. The town is situated on the northern bank of the Vaal River and was founded in 1892. Three Rivers is a suburb of Vereeniging situated on the eastern side of the Klip River and is bordered by Three Rivers East. The southern border is formed by a wildlife conservation area and the Sugarbush River with the Vaal River on its western side.

Vanderbijlpark | Sasolburg | Vaalpark

Vanderbijlpark is situated on the northern bank of the Vaal River and was named after Hendrik van der Bijl, an electrical engineer and founder of the town. Historical townships Boipatong, Bophelong, Sebokeng, Evaton and Sharpeville are close to the town. The Sharpeville Memorial is commemorated annually on the 21st March as Human Rights day.

Sasolburg is a neighbouring town of Vanderbijlpark. It is in the far north of the Free State province on the Southern banks of the Vaal river and forms part of the Vaal Triangle.

Parys is a small town situated on the banks of the Vaal River in the Freestate province of South Africa. The name of the town is the Afrikaans translation of Paris. The name was given by a German surveyor named Schilbach who had participated in the Siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War and the location next to the Vaal reminded him of Paris on the River Seine. This town attracts hundreds of visitors over weekends and has a large variety of antique shops and restaurants.

The Vredefort Dome is the largest and oldest known meteor impact site in the world. This impact structure bears witness to the greatest known single energy release event on earth and was listed as a world heritage site in 2005.

Meyerton is a town in Gauteng , 15 km north of Vereeniging . It forms part of the Midvaal Local Municipality and the Sedibeng District Municipality . Meyerton was founded in 1891 and was named after JP Meyer , a field cornet , member of the Transvaal Volksraad and owner of the farm Klipriviersberg.

Meyerton is often referred to as the home of the school started by the chat queen Oprah Winfrey (the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls), but it is in Henley-on-Klip . It is an idyllic village outside Meyerton along the Klip River .

Henley on Klip is an idyllic village located just north-east of Meyerton along the Klip River . The "Bass Lake" in Henley-on-Klip is a popular destination for scuba divers

The Oprah Winfrey 's "Leadership Academy for Girls" is located in Henley-on-Klip.

Heidelberg

Heidelberg is situated at the foot of the Suikerbosrand , along the N3 highway connecting Johannesburg to Durban .

The town originated in 1862 as a trading station. Many of the buildings dating from the 1890s to 1910s have been preserved and remain characteristic of Heidelberg.

The home of AG Visser , the well-known Afrikaans poet, is located in the town.

Heidelberg is also known for its annual “Vark Fees”

Vaal Dam | Deneysville | Oranjeville

Situated 77km south of Johannesburg the Vaal Dam is South Africa’s second biggest dam by area and fourth largest by volume. It has more than 800km of shoreline and is a favoured destination for water sport enthusiasts. It's one of the popular inland water tourist attractions in South Africa.

There are a number of yacht clubs and two marinas. The dam has its own island which hosts the annual Round the Island race, holder of the Guinness World Record for the largest inland yacht race. Other world class boating events on the dam include Keelboat Week and the Bayshore 200km jet ski race.

The largest town on the Vaal Dam is Deneysville which lies just above the Dam Wall on the Free State side of the Vaal River. Deneysville was established in 1936 and named after Deneys Reitz. The stone cottage on the waterfront which was originally built as a hunting lodge by the Reitz family, is now St. Peter's Church, and has become a popular wedding venue.
