Historical townships Boipatong, Bophelong, Sebokeng, Evaton and Sharpeville are close to the town. The Sharpeville Memorial is commemorated annually on the 21st March as Human Rights day.
Sasolburg is a neighbouring town of Vanderbijlpark. It is in the far north of the Free State province on the Southern banks of the Vaal river and forms part of the Vaal Triangle.
