Heidelberg is situated at the foot of the Suikerbosrand , along the N3 highway connecting Johannesburg to Durban .
The town originated in 1862 as a trading station. Many of the buildings dating from the 1890s to 1910s have been preserved and remain characteristic of Heidelberg.
The home of AG Visser , the well-known Afrikaans poet , is located in the town.
Heidelberg is also known for its annual “Vark Fees”
